Almost nothing is what it appears to be.
The appearance/belief of “what is” has little to do with “structural reality”.
Nothing is as it appears to be.
Almost nothing is what it appears to be.
Structural reality is a better indication of what is true than surface/appearance reality.
One needs to look to structural reality to discover what constitutes empirical reality.
Structural reality is empirical, can be replicated/reliability and is verifiable/valid. It needs to meet both tests of reliability and validity.
Replicated is where repeats of its discovery always yields the same result. Validity is that the empirical replication is consistent with precursor causal events, concurrent empirical events, and post-causal events. Warning: correlation is not a factor of validity, at best it may be indicative.

As Pangloss said to Candide, “we live in the best of all possible worlds”.
Think about it this way. Advertising sells by offering hope. It rarely works for the buyer and most likely works for the seller. If his scam worked as well as he said it does, he would be doing it, as it would be giving him so much money that he would not have the time or interest to sell it to others. Only when a scam does not work do people then try to sell it to others. Does this help?
If something is presented in a formal form, be it typeset or Hegelian dialectic, etc., its elements and its whole is presumed to be true.
Humans by instinct do what they are told.
Humans by autonomic response do what they are told
Humans without obvious thinking do what they are told
They believe it to be true.

First lines/sections of the book?
(Each line is developed into a philosophical discussion, like Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein, or perhaps a Socratic beg the next question and response.)
1) Almost nothing is as it appears to be.
2) The simpler it appears to be, the more complex it is below the surface.
3) As one progresses from one stage to the next, if the complexity increases, to be successful, one must continue to pursue to the next stage. When the complexity decreases and future decision trees also appear to be decreasing, one is most likely proceeding towards an identification of the end stage.
4) The final stage is likely a simple yes/no proposition.
5) The final stage may lead to a new identification of another “point of reality” or “fact” to be examined.

from email to JA of 10 Sept 2021 This is part of a long-term slide that reflects the growth of Canadian nationalism.
As nationalism rises in any country, the country looks increasing inward and ascribes home-grown (whatever the subject) as the best in the world.
This is reflected in the general slide in the educational level of the leaders of the country.
In the last 100 years:
King PhD Harvard, Diefenbaker MA Saskatchewan, Pearson MA Oxford, Trudeau MA Harvard, Clark MA Alberta, Turner MA Oxford, Harper MA Calgary
The rest had less education.
Education is not the-be-all-and-the-end-all, but it does make a difference.
People are entertained by circuses, and as has been ably demonstrated in many countries, the best showman wins! Trust there is no reason for me to list the many countries and winners.

Article writer is ignorant and so is the copy editor “The Financial Times says there is now enough vacant property in the nation to house more than 90 million people. That’s enough empty homes to fit the entire population of Canada. Or France. Or Germany.”
Makes no sense Canada (it would fit about 2.43 times its population) Canada 2020 population is estimated at 37,742,154 people at mid year according to UN data.
France (about 1.5 times its population) The current population of France is 65,452,786 as of Wednesday, September 29, 2021
Germany (more than 1 times its population) The current population of Germany is 84,116,426 as of Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Hi Farah. Thanks for the hours and more thanks for the excellent work. If you can do the draft for next week by Sunday night it would be appreciated and the results on late Tuesday, so Clare can followup Wednesday morning. Holiday week messes the schedule. Will send you some material and links tonight which you can use if you. There maybe formula in last weeks email. A link to our website and a link or 2 to government authority website material. Any thought? Vaccine mandate case will most likely to go to the Supreme Court, but depending on what the Appeals Court decides, the Supreme Court may decide to not hear the case. It is complex. The mandate is clearly constitutional, only the radical fringe of the right wing does not recognize it. Vaccination has been mandated for children to go to school for a very long time. Fluoridation and chlorination of the drinking water supply are other examples of vaccination, only the delivery system is different, using drinking water instead of needles. Remember, almost all is not what it appears to be. You will have a better life if you do not allow yourself to be mislead by the political press, neither from the left nor from the right. Look at what is empirical and live/decide based on what is pragmatic. Only you can decide what is important for you and what will make you happy.
The purpose of a prison is to train people to be better criminals.
The proof of a prison’s success rate is the recidivism rate, the higher the better.
Given that prisons are largely run by for-profit companies that pay dividends to their shareholders, it is in their interest that the recidivism rate be high.
Recidivism, for these purposes, should be defined as the occurrence, guilt and prison sentence for any crime, not just a read of a previous crime.
The less one has to occupy one’s time, the greater very small matters are perceived has having the most consequential meaning/importance.

The smaller the population center, the more entrenched are thought and behavior patterns.

The smaller the population center, the more limited are acceptable thought and behavior patterns.
The larger a population center, the greater all of the above.
People identify reality as static when in it is dynamic.
They expect that the world’s climate should remain the same, but empirical historical records (geologic, fossil, tree rings, etc.) demonstrate that climate is dynamic and always slowly changing.
Look through form to function.
When one is going to do anything and definitely when it comes to investments and making money, one needs to look through form to function.
The “form” includes what others tell you about the matter, or tell you how it will benefit you (it is also the shape of the package, business presentation, etc.).
The “function” includes determining who will gain the most from the matter (it is also how something functions/operates).
One of my friend’s, a retired Canadian lawyer who lived and did business in LA for 20+ years, puts it this way:
in the US, the way people operate in business is “how many of your dollars can they put in their pockets, all else be damned”.
They have no concern if they take all your money and give you nothing in return, and in fact that is what they all try to do.
They will lie, cheat and do whatever they wish, legal or not legal.
In the US you can do anything you wish that is illegal. Whether there is a discovery, a government action or a penalty is an administrative matter that may likely not happen. They is too much to discover and too few people to do it.
It is called a market economy (all to me, and nothing to you), not a moral economy (where there is a sense of fairness).
So, people are deceived by the use of the vocabulary of a moral economy in “form” while the activity/function is that of market economy.
All of this makes investing very difficult.
Truth/empirical-validity can only be determined from outside of the system of knowledge within it resides. Any determinization that relies in any way with anything within the system is contaminated by its system.
Do not be concerned about the rational, only about the irrational. But, what constitutes rationality, like reality and common sense is idiosyncratically defined.
The purpose of using a democratic form of governing is to dissipate political tension/stress.
The purpose of a civil court system is to dissipate the stress between the parties.
How can one know if one has enough information to make a decision, when one does not know the boundaries of the universe of knowledge that pertains to the situation?
People do not make decisions based on value, they make decisions based on perception of value.
Value can be replaced or mean economic, political, social (norms, family, etc.), religious, moral, etc.
There is no such thing as “free”. There always is a cost.
Justice system vs legal system
Justice system vs advocacy legal system
Fair vs procedural system
Discovery of empirical facts/truth vs fairy tales/advocacy of the interest of the parties
What constitutes democracy and a democracy system of government/governance.
Most every person wants to be considered “special” and recognized.
This is used by others to manipulate each person.
Appeal to each person’s “ego”.
Silo thinking:
If the only tool one has is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.
The greatest use of vocabulary is deception.
The most common use of vocabulary is deception
The most common use of vocabulary in commercial speech is deception.
Political use of the term “common sense” is an emotional appeal used to curry favor and/or convince its audience to follow or to the take action advocated by the person making the appeal. It is an effective way to have the audience follow an evil path.
The weaker the position, the louder the noise.
The smallest dog has the loudest bark.
The louder the presentation of an idea or position, the greater the likelihood of its advocating a false proposition.
Should the book be presented as a discussion between an old elephant and a young fly?
Nothing is free
Free is a concept used by the offer-er to gain advantage from the offer-ee.
A person who claims another is a fascist, is usually more fascist in their thinking, views and beliefs than the person they are labeling as such.
People who focus on the minutiae of life and require rigid structure for functional behavior have life/time pass them by without progress, reward, accomplishment and happiness.
Capitalist system countries view Marx’s analysis/observations of capitalism as evil and attempt to suppress knowledge of it.
Marx’s observations can best be used by capitalists to create efficiencies in production and increase the capital base needed to drive future advancements in science, technology and increase the standard of living for all people on the planet.
To do so, a capitalist system needs functionaries (also known as wage slaves and interest slaves), those concrete convergent thinkers who can be brainwashed/trained to take and implement orders/instructions. One person cannot build an Egyptian pyramid. Many functionaries working in a bureaucracy can do so. The bureaucracy is conceived by and the idea for final product is created by an abstract concept thinker. The access to capital (financial/human) allows for the implementation.
The smaller a person’s contact group, the higher the likelihood that the individual and their group have alternate belief structure of what constitutes their understanding of reality.
Example, members of The Farm in Upsala believing that the contents of the book, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, were real.
Any time religious or non-profit leaders are living in royal splendor there is something unethical or illegal occurring.
May also apply to other leaders, political, corporate, educational, etc.
The statement is obvious to you (and me). Sent the email to a number of people. It is my observation that most people do not “think” about the consequences of event A, that is B, and cannot conceive of succeeding events C,D, etc. This leads them to believe in “fate”, or as in the old Doris Day song “whatever will be, will be”.
Author is in the business of making money for himself. He sounds like Trump, ignorant of history and self-centered. He is the demagogue he accuses others to be.
He also reminds me of the political appeal of the Social Credit Party.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_credit
The pandemic is a very complex issue that has had many similar occurrences in history. The solutions presented in the political press and that proposed by some politicians is warped by the vast amount of money that is being made by drug companies, medical industry, etc. The collection of data of what is occurring is also being warped.
No one seems to remember the cholera epidemics of the 1800s, etc.
Like the cholera epidemics, it is very difficult to manage a situation when society’s capacity to deliver medical care is far below the need. Vaccinations are like putting fingers in a thick dyke wall. Not a solution, but almost all we effectively have at the moment. As a top Russian virologist said over a year ago, we are in a war with the coronavirus and we must throw anything we can use at it. To not do so, only results in greater causalities.
The situation plagues all societies and all economic and political systems. To claim otherwise, demonstrates one’s ignorance of history and reality.
Some people manufacture conspiracy theories based on isolated shreds of reality.

Does this make sense to you?
The older a person becomes the more conservative they become. The older a person becomes, the less likely they wish to make any changes in their lives. There is security in the settled behavior pattern of the past.
This also explains why people stay in dysfunctional abusive relationships. They crave the security of knowing the behavioral response of the abusing partner. This is less threatening than not knowing the behavioral response of no relationship or a future relationship .
When a person looks in a mirror, they do not see their personality.
or is it the characteristics of their personality.
When people/tribe look in the mirror, or at a photograph/image of themselves, they do not see their non-visual characteristics.
Voltaire in Candide, has Pangloss say to Candide:
“all is for the best” in the “best of all possible worlds”.
As you realize, one of the hallmarks of tribal, ideological, linguistic, religious, national and civil societies is their public sector brainwashing, which they call “education”.
Education is more appropriately defined as learning “why”, and how to advance the state of knowledge. Training is teaching “how” to do something. The training is confused as being education. Training is effectively brainwashing.
Each group brainwashes their members to believe that only the members and sometimes only the “best” members of the group are chosen by some “higher” authority/history/destiny and that the unchosen are lesser humans that one can regard/treat as objects.
Training/brainwashing has a positive role in creating and maintaining the stability of a civil society.
So, what do you expect of a nationalist attitude? Canadians, like all others, are the same way. Or, as my Uzbek assistant (trained with an M.A. in how to do public sector brainwashing) says, “sheep”.
How great a discrepancy does there need to be between “authority” reports of “reality” and that “experienced” in the daily lives of subjects, before subjects create significant civil disturbances with destruction of public and private assets?
The inflation numbers in the press are largely a fiction/hallucination.The reason is that in all countries, nationalism trumps reality. Only when the generally experienced reality deviates too far from the reported reality is there civil unrest. Or, in less likely instances, just political change. For example the campaign slogan “The economy, stupid” is a phrase that was coined by James Carville in 1992″ was used by the new candidate and lead to the defeat of the incumbent.
There are many ways to manipulate a number, such as having an historical series, but change the definition/composition of the data points, without recalculating all the data points in the series. This is a problem in both commercial (Dow Jones Industrial Average, etc.) and “official” (inflation, etc.) series.
Here is an inflation recalculation, by the economist Williams, based on definitions held constant.http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/inflation-charts
From my experience, his current inflation numbers are too low. It appears Williams is using government data and then recalculating based on a constant definition. He appears to have not recalculated based on the composition and the collection of the data.
Thanks for the article.
Fink sounds like “Henny Penny, the sky is falling”. There is no doubt he is a smart man, shrewd, and a good salesperson. But not educated, and it shows. He was trained at a highly corrupt fifth-rate trade-school, UCLA, and their MBA program. (The football coach of this publicly funded state university has a salary that is over 10 times the salary of the president of the country and over 30 times that of “The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff [who] is, by law, the highest-ranking military officer of the United States Armed Forces”. Is this not corruption?)
My father and grandfathers, as importers/exporters dealt all around the world.
About 60+ years ago, recall having a discussion with my father about the use of domestic vs foreign suppliers. His view was that one must have a balance of both, that neither could be relied on, and each was an essential backup for the other.
In today’s digital interconnected world, this is more critical than ever.
Solar storms follow an 11 year cycle. Geomagnetic storms, like the one that wiped out about 40+ recently orbited Starlink satellites, and resulted in the Carrington event of 1859, reinforce the necessity of integrated globalization.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event
https://www.npr.org/2022/02/09/1079575679/spacex-40-starlink-satellites-destroyed
https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/solar-cycles/en/
If there is no duplication of essential digital financial data in many places around the world, then when a geomagnetic storm hits one area and results in a total loss of its digital data, it will cause havoc for the planet.
Used to maintain servers in a colocation site in downtown LA. It was the hub of the internet backbone for this area of the country. It was built by Interstate Bank 4 levels below ground, to maximize safety from black swan events including geomagnetic storms. Was called one night (by the controlling data center in the Philippines) at 2am to go down and try to restore 16 banks of servers that had failed about 11am the prior morning. At 3:30am was running extension cords long distances trying to find enough juice to generate enough light to see without flashlights and start a few servers. All the while, the electricians toiled on locating all the blown high-voltage industrial fuses that had to be sourced and replaced by hand. The fuses had been blown after the diesel-powered generators to power the backbone hub had failed, the industrial battery backup systems had failed, and the DWP power had been restored only to cause a mighty surge that melted fuses and circuits. The originating cause at 11am was the failure in a major high voltage line that fed the LA downtown area. The failure resulted from a DWP workman who made a human error. He connected a live line straight to a ground line.
There was good backup in the Philippines, and with redundancy and load balancing in a number of server sites around the world.
These are a demonstrations of the importance of globalization?
Fink sounds ignorant. He may have an agenda to profit from his buying and selling of securities.
Would not trust him to be any more honest in his public statements than a politician who feigns peace and then wages war.
Realize that this does not respond to your question as to “I do not see the answer as to where we are going at present and yet it will affect which stocks I buy?”
The answer always relies on the macroeconomic direction of mankind, tempered by the current geopolitical forces and then the fundamentals of a business operation. Reading Marx’s Das Kapital will help. It was the best book that I have studied (at a private non-profit liberal arts college in the US) as an instruction manual to be a successful capitalist. Yes, realize this is not the interpretation of those who have not read the book who view it as evil. Ignorance always seems to triumph over what is real.
Does this help?
Neither. Sequencing is the genetic analysis of the collected specimen (for example, a specimen could be a nasal swab).

The answer to concern and mandates is complex. You have many interacting issues, public fatigue, political nonsense, the belief system of privileged anarchy (freedom of speech, freedom of belief, freedom to kill others, and the right of privacy), the ebb and flow of the waves, distraction by management of the data and management of the news, PR/public-sector brainwashing, etc.
As a Republican Senator, who is a medical doctor, observed about a year or so ago, when politicians mess with public health, public health loses.
This is a public health issue messed-up with pharm companies, money-making, politics, etc.
Yes, it makes sense that some States have higher rates than others. There is a whole area of study in epidemiology that studies transmission patterns and forecasts spread for public health planning and response.Examples here:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8285044/https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/maps-visuals
Good discussion here:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-04653-2
China did not currently effectively shut-down Shanghai and other areas for little reason.Covid virus transmission is a serious issue in those areas.
Did I miss any of your questions? Is this clear, or am I still not clearly explaining part of it? Does this help?
Human rights in other areas of the world are 4 rights: food in one’s stomach, roof over one’s head, clothes on one’s back and health care.
In US, there are 5 human rights: freedom of speech, freedom to bear arms, freedom of thought/belief/religion/conscience, right of privacy, right to vote.
If one conceptualizes the totality of knowledge as being what is contained within a circle, then the totality of what is unknown is the area contingent to the outside of the circumference.
The smaller the diameter, the shorter the circumference. The smaller the diameter of the circle, the less the amount of knowledge contained within the circle, and thus it also has a shorter circumference and less recognition of what is not known.
Within the circle, the contained knowledge can range from diffuse to very dense. The denser the knowledge, the more is known about comparatively less.
This applies to individuals, groups and humanity as a whole.
By expanding the diameter of the circle, one expands the recognition of the expanse of the unknown.
The smarter a person thinks they are, the dumber their behavior . . . . . . and the fewer, more isolated and small-minded a population . . . then very small events become newsworthy . . .
That was my experience during the years there 1969-1984, And, when I have been back in the past 10 years, it was also that way. And, helping people there since then, it has also been that way.
It is minimally regulated wild, that is straining the bounds of minimal regulation based on a self-belief of righteousness.
It is a typical small-town mentality circumstance compounded with being in an isolated area.”We have the best doctors, the best hospital, the best university, the best medical school, the best law school, the best air to breathe, the best workers, the best scenery, the best fish to eat, the best forests, the best cross-country skiing, etc.”
Perhaps in the larger context, this will make some sense:
If one conceptualizes the totality of knowledge as being what is contained within a circle, then the totality of what is unknown is the area contiguous to the outside of the circumference.
The less one knows, the more one knows everything.
The more one knows, the less one knows about everything.
The denser one’s knowledge, the less one knows about everything beyond that focused denseness.
The denser one’s knowledge and the belief in one’s being an expert in that knowledge, the more one thinks one is an expert in everything.
Does this help or make sense?

You will notice that the stories all tend to originate from the same source, CBC Thunder Bay operations.
CBC established an operation in Thunder Bay that creates stories for the local/regional area and all the many repeater stations throughout Northwestern Ontario (see list below). These stories are then fodder for the network and the wire services.

As you would know, we are having a provincial election and at present, Ford will win easily and the real contest is between NDP and the Liberals for opposition. I think the NDP make more sense but people in Canada are reluctant to vote NDP when it comes down to the wire. Ford is pointing out many problems and spouting off about how he will solve them. The trouble is, he has already had four years to solve them and never did anything about them.

The knowledge of the time is probably no longer relevant, but about 50 years ago designed a study for the Federal Government, which they then did, to track the time-spatial geographic pattern of the flow of news information across the country.

We have gone back and forth previously on the lack of knowledge and drugs in small towns, certainly in Ontario so Thunder Bay is no different than other small towns here – BUT Thunder Bay seems to get more than its share of publicity for its problems. Is there a reason for this? The only other city that might make news is Sudbury.

It is a typical small-town mentality circumstance compounded with being in an isolated area. “We have the best doctors, the best hospital, the best university, the best medical school, the best law school, the best air to breathe, the best workers, the best scenery, the best fish to eat, the best forests, the best cross-country skiing, etc.”
Perhaps in the larger context, this will make some sense:
If one conceptualizes the totality of knowledge as being what is contained within a circle, then the totality of what is unknown is the area contiguous to the outside of the circumference.

H,
Yes, that was the story and I did not bring it up because I knew you would have seen it. Your comments are very true.
Jane Austin wrote a novel about two girls being born in a small town. One was born into wealth (Emma) and the other found herself in poverty (Jane). Jane was taken to London and raised and given a good education by friends of her deceased father. Young Jane was not allowed to visit her small town even though she missed her friends there. The novel has always intrigued me because the protagonist is Emma but I have always felt that Jane was the real hero. In 1990 an new novel was published by another author about Jane Fairfax. In London Jane and her friends discussed the Napoleonic Wars, the treaty of Amiens, etc. When Jane was older she was finally able to return to her small town for a visit. Her excitement on her return quickly turned to disappointment when she found the big news on her arrival was that a neighbour’s pig had escaped and was running loose through the town. She realised she no longer belonged there. For many years I have kept that story in mind.
When the Allan’s came to Canada from Scotland they acquired the lands along a concession road in Varney, a place no one has heard of, between Mount Forest and Durham on Highway 6. Whenever I visited Durham I was treated like a hero by the residents there because I was one of the Allan’s. When I returned to Canada from LA I thought about settling in Durham, a peaceful place that no one would consider sending missiles to, where I was respected, etc. Upon my return I made many trips to Mount Forest, Varney and Durham and of my cousins would come with me on my visits. I would enjoy sitting in the living room of the home my grandfather built and where my father was born. The current owners would get so excited when we arrived at the farm in Varney. However, Jane Austin’s novel and the Jane Fairfax novel would loom in my mind. As an aside, one of the first matters I attended to upon my return to Canada was to arrange my cemetery plot and headstone. I will be buried in Varney upon my passing in a cemetery established by the Allan family and where most of the Allans are buried.

Here is the rest of the explanation (accidently just stumbled upon it while looking for something else).Thunder Bay is one of the 20 “default local regions” for CBC. As such, it has equal weight to a province or a major city. This is absurd. Someone from Mars looking in on Earth would see Thunder Bay as equal to British Columbia or Toronto?

(p.s., Sudbury like Thunder Bay is as big as BC, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, as they are all “equal” CBC “local regions” image below. It distorts perspective. Rather like a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice being equal to a sidewalk sweeper. Both are important to the functioning of society, but both do not receive the same level of medical care or police protection. All societies are bigoted in some regard. Leaders are first even amongst equals. There is confusion between perceptions of equality and equity that have now become politicized. In ancient times, when studying American Intentional Communities, equity meant that resources were allocated based on potential and achieved merit of individuals. This is no longer so, equity now means resources are allocated based on perceived past deficit of resources allocated to a “marginalized” group. This article includes both the American and Canadian perspectives:https://www.diffen.com/difference/Equality-vs-EquityThis shift is just another blow to meritocracy and the advancement of society).
The article is crass ignorance. Yes, there is an opioid problem, but the article masks the reality. The opioid problem is big business, creating jobs in an area without jobs, creating government income in an area without private sector initiated revenue. The opioid problem has allowed the medical community and the social welfare community in Northwestern Ontario to create a huge population of people who are dependent on methadone and suboxone, legally prescribed and supplied drugs.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/methadone-clinics-opioid-crisis-thunder-bay-1.4854561 and see (article copied below)https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-methadone-the-double-edged-sword-wreaking-havoc-in-thunder-bay/
My guess from the articles and from my observation and discussions from when last in the area (about 3 years ago), is that 5+% of the population is on methadone and suboxone. There are no jobs for the young mainly males who are coming into Thunder Bay from remote First Nation settlements, where there is also no viable employment for them. In large numbers they become addicted to the legal drugs of methadone and suboxone.
The article focusing on opioids and not even mentioning the wider issues of cause (no employment opportunities) and profitable effect (legal drug dispensing), only perpetuates the myths and the profitability.
Sad.

Methadone: the double-edged sword wreaking havoc in Thunder BayGLORIA GALLOWAYTHUNDER BAYPUBLISHED MAY 27, 2019UPDATED MAY 28, 2019This article was published more than 2 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.
The leading opioid present in the bodies of overdose victims in Thunder Bay is methadone.DAVID_JACKSON/THE GLOBE AND MAIL
22 COMMENTS SHARE BOOK MARK The lineups start before 8 in the morning outside the drug stores of Thunder Bay – recovering opioid users form queues to obtain their daily dose of methadone, the drug that alleviates the wretched symptoms of withdrawal.
Across Canada, the opioid epidemic killed an estimated 4,000 people last year. Since 2014, fentanyl is the drug that has been implicated in a majority of the deaths. But Thunder Bay is different.
There is fentanyl here, too – and heroin and crack cocaine and crystal meth. But the drug most frequently found in the bodies of people who died after overdosing in this city is the same one prescribed to wean people off their addictions.
The leading opioid present in the bodies of overdose victims in Thunder Bay is methadone.
“With methadone, you can’t jump back and forth, you have to stay on the same amount of dosage,” said Ron Kanutski, a former drug user who comes from the Lake Helen Reserve and is now an addiction counsellor. “So, if you are taking methadone, and then you are taking fentanyl, and then you go back to your methadone dosage, that’s it. Pow. Lights out.”
The statistics on methadone in Thunder Bay are sobering.
There were 1,827 people taking legally prescribed methadone in Thunder Bay and the surrounding district in 2018, a number that was down slightly from five years earlier when there were 1,995. But, over the same period, the number of users of Suboxone – a newer and less-addictive synthetic opioid that is a methadone alternative − climbed from 461 to 2,077.
That means the number of people in this region receiving opioid therapy increased by more than 56 per cent over those years.
It could be that more people in this region are feeling comfortable about coming forward and getting treatment, said Cynthia Olsen, the head of the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy, a program created by the city in 2009. Or it could mean, she said, that more people are becoming addicted to opioids.
“We know, across Canada, opioid use has not slowed down,” Ms. Olsen said. “And neither have the deaths.”
STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT
Thunder Bay’s drug strategy involves 60 community groups that are working to prevent, treat and reduce the harms of substance abuse. It targets a wide range of drugs, including alcohol, prescription pharmaceuticals, marijuana and illegal opioids. The most recent report of its opioid-response task force points out that Thunder Bay has the highest number of people on methadone in Ontario and that it is the drug most often detected in the city’s overdose deaths.
Opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, codeine, hydromorphone and morphine are a class of drug that activate the body’s opioid receptors to inhibit pain or induce euphoria. They are prescribed legally for pain relief, and are consumed illegally for recreational purposes.
But they can also be deadly. An overdose of opioids − including methadone − slows breathing, sometimes to a stop.
Opioids are also addictive. Withdrawal brings on chills, widespread pain and body aches, nausea, insomnia, diarrhea, nervousness and sweating. If a drug user decides it’s time to quit, a doctor may prescribe methadone or Suboxone to alleviate those symptoms without bringing on a high, which allows the person to live a more stable life.
When methadone became widely available as a treatment option in Ontario in 1996, it was intended to be taken for a year or two as a way of gradually ending an addiction, Mr. Kanutski said. But some people in Thunder Bay, he added, have been on it for decades.
Although that is true everywhere in Ontario, Thunder Bay is home to a disproportionate number of methadone users.
According to the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network, 2.2 per cent of the residents in the area served by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, which slices across the centre of Northwestern Ontario from Lake Superior to Hudson Bay, were taking opioids to treat their addictions in 2018. That was 5½ times the provincial rate, and more than 10 times the rate in Toronto.
In 2018, there were 250 doctors who prescribed opioids, including methadone, in the Thunder Bay region. Toronto, with 25 times the population, had just more than 900.
In 2014, as Alvin Fiddler, the Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, accepted an award from the Thunder Bay Medical Society, he took doctors to task for opening a seventh methadone clinic in Thunder Bay but failing to provide adequate health services on reserves. His censure made little impact.
Prescribing methadone can be a lucrative proposition.
A number of Ontario’s highest-billing physicians are methadone providers. They charge, not only for prescribing the drug and for addiction counselling, but also for the frequent urine tests that are required by their patients, who must turn up weekly to stay in the program.
Methadone, meanwhile, is a crutch, not a cure.
“It keeps people dependent,” said Mr. Kanutski, who was never addicted to opioids but says he used “probably just about everything else” before he became sober 29 years ago.
“You will never hear about a methadone healing centre,” he said. “It’s called a maintenance program because it’s paid to keep you where you are at.”
On the streets, opioid users call it the “liquid handcuff” because, once they are in an opioid program, their life becomes regimented around their next dose. Every day, those who have not earned the right to walk away with more than a single dose must make a trip to the pharmacy.
Even the most trusted users, who are allowed to “carry” a week’s supply, must take one dose in seven orally under the supervision of a pharmacist or doctor before they can go home with another six that have been mixed with fruit juice so they cannot be injected into someone’s arm.
But still, it is diverted for sale on the streets.
In 2015-16, the most recent year for which numbers are available, methadone was present in the bodies of half of the 14 people who succumbed to a drug overdose in the Thunder Bay region.
Ms. Olsen cautions that the presence of methadone in the body of someone who had died of a drug overdose does not mean that methadone was the killer. There may have been other opioids in the person’s system that contributed to, or even caused, the death.
Nor does it mean that the person who died was receiving methadone prescribed by a doctor, Ms. Olsen said. There is a healthy black market in methadone in Thunder Bay.
A pharmacist who worked for several years at a Shoppers Drug Mart in the city and now works for the provincial government recalls the various ways that patients would try to keep some of their dosage for resale.
Some would try to hide it in their cheeks, said the pharmacist, who was granted anonymity because he does not have permission from his current employer to speak on the record. That is why all users must say a few words at the drug store counter after they have downed their daily dose.
There are also many stories, he said, of people vomiting up the methadone so they could sell it illegally. Drug users will buy bile infused with methadone.
Methadone can take several days to stabilize in the body, the pharmacist said. So some people may try to buy extra amounts from a friend or a dealer when they do not get immediate relief from their withdrawal symptoms.
And the strict regimen of the methadone program may also deter people from taking part, he said.
Police Chief Sylvie Hauth said methadone is among the drugs traded by the criminal gangs that have moved into Northwestern Ontario.
“They see how lucrative it is,” Chief Hauth said. “We can’t arrest them fast enough. We have times when we have put three in custody and six will be behind them saying ‘I will take my chances, it’s worth it.’ ”
Many people in Thunder Bay are making money off methadone, Mr. Kanutski said.
Some of them are doctors, some are pharmacists and some are illegal drug dealers. And the desperation of the users who are not being weaned off of opioids is keeping them in business, he said. “People have to know there is a way out” of methadone treatment.

So I waited until the end of branch open hours on Wednesday to make the deposit (and do a minor transaction for myself). Do not have anyone who deposits my checks at US Bank (Sandi’s bank) or anyone who issues me a check from US Bank, so I do not have any pattern of actual interaction to observe between WF and US Bank. Suspect the worst-case scenario for J is that it transacted immediately to US Bank, and that US Bank gave J/S until noon or branch closing time on Thursday to cover the check.

Life is not simple and life is never clear. Almost all reality is not as it appears to be. Do not be concerned if you are confused, it is healthy to be confused and to seek out the structural reality. Have been in business for 50+ years and still constantly deal with this issue. Constantly ask others who have been in business for 50+ years (and they ask me) what is the structural reality in a specific business model and whether I am seeing it “correctly”. In business, there is profit in confusion.

How can it be? People who are for abortion are usually against capital punishment. And people for are pro-life/anti-abortion are usually in favor of capital punishment. Capital punishment being the taking-of-life/murder by the state. And it is okay (and/or honourable) to fight wars and murder other people? In civil society one has the “freedom” to kill another person, it is an administrative action that decides if the person who did the killing will be criminally charged, and if so, then there is a trial to determine if there is guilt, and if found guilty another process to determine what if any the penalty is. Unlike towards other animals, we do not slaughter other humans for food, except during situations of dire famine. If one lives in the wilderness with wild animals who can pose a danger to human life or who’s meat provides animal protein for the human diet, a hunting rifle is a practical instrument. But in a urban society, what necessary use, that cannot be accomplished in a less damaging manner, is there for any firearm other than to cause injury/death to another human? What can we learn from these conflicting views to make this a planet a better place for all?
Most people consider themselves entitled.
It is not what they can constructively contribute to humanity, it is what others must do for them.
What constitutes reality for each individual is idiosyncratically defined.
Remember, almost nothing is what it appears to be. Appearance of success is no indication of success.
This country creates “holidays” for political purposes and then trivializes them by turning them into commercialized events.
The creators’ claim for each holiday a religious and/or historic importance.
One of the purposes of a “liberal democracy” is the working out of political tension without the use of violence/physical harm/murder.
Same is true about civil court actions.
To maintain civil order on the streets, it is very important to distract people from their problems and give them hope for better times ahead, all else be damned. Sometimes that means allowing the most irritating events to happen and then solve it and claim one is the savior. It has worked for all politicians from the most evil ones to the most altruistic ones. So, what do you expect?
How does one identify reality when its presentation is determined by societal forces of tribalism, religion, nationalism, ideology, advertising, leaders, ponzi artists and others?

Humans and digitally controlled robots
Background:
The wheel was invented 5000 years ago, the gear was invented 3000 years ago, and both were major drivers of human productivity.
With each incremental increase in productivity, it takes fewer humans to provide all needs and desires for all humans.
With the increasing numbers of humans on the planet and with increasing productivity, the planet always needs fewer human workers.
This is the macroeconomic direction of humans on planet Earth.
Due to this direction, the US governments now feed 40+% of the US population. This will only increase if there is to be social and civil stability.
This is true of all peoples in all countries, as it is a product of human “progress” on planet Earth.
It has been and will continue to be a continuing challenge to keep an increasing proportion of the population doing no productive work, feel satisfied with their lives and not creating nor participating in dysfunctional civil disorder/behavior.
There appears to be in probably every country a segment of its population that does not comprehend that for there to be the creation, preservation and growth of capital assets there needs to be civil order on the streets.
There appear to be two schools of thought/practice on how to accomplish this, by persuasion or by force (with narrowly proscribed/limited behavior).
Neither ultimately succeeds over a long period of time, unless the population is sufficiently fed.
With the increased use of digitally controlled robots, the situation will continue to accelerate.

The systemic issues are how people “think” and the functioning of bureaucracies.
Bureaucracies are rule-bound systems, and given their objective to use pawns to achieve much more than any pawn can individually achieve, they are an immensely successful way to organized human behavior/effort. Bureaucratic systems have no intelligence. They are systems designed to replicate and optimize. They appear to always need external disruption to change their pattern.
Humans, for the most part, accept or reject information/sensation/perception based in whether it matches their existing patterns of memory. Those humans who best exemplify this are held in highest esteem, are promoted, are viewed as strong leaders. Those who process differently are relegated to being artists, mystics, shamans or treated as psychotics.
Most humans “need” a jet fighter.
They will mentally/politically in “argument” run circles around any other idea.
A few examples, from my observations/experiences (my digression):
In 1971, when I opened the school at the Gull Bay Band Indian Reserve (now called Gull Bay First Nation/Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek), learned about a program that had just ended.
It was during a period of high unemployment. The reserve had about 200 residents, about 1/2 children and about 40 “homes”. There was little for adults to do, other than to receive welfare and drink alcohol (it was a dry reserve, but the welfare was personally delivered by 2 “officials” who arrived to the semi-isolated reserve, once a month, delivered the cheques and promptly left for the long trip back to Thunder Bay, 144 miles away. The bootleggers, then promptly arrived and exchanged the cheques for a supply of mainly alcohol and some currency.).
This destructive pattern repeated every month. It was in the interest and functioning of the “bureaucracies (government and bootlegger)” for it to do so.
The government program that had just ended, had paid unemployed electricians and plumbers from Thunder Bay (a dying city with a falling population), to come to Gull Bay and teach unemployed adult males the trade of being electricians and plumbers. The Gull Bay attendees were required to attend to receive their welfare cheques. There was no need to build anything in Gull Bay. The electrical “supply” was a intermittent diesel generator with a variable rate cycle (electric clocks need a constant rate cycle to correctly function, we used the sun to tell time). The water “supply” was from wells and depended on the operation of the diesel generator, the sewage used septic tank and field systems.
The end result was a busy-work project with more “trained” unemployed individuals.
It was in the interest and functioning of the “government bureaucracies” for this to occur.
Galileo concluded (with Copernicus) and promoted that the Earth rotated around the Sun once every 24 hours. The result was that the Roman Catholic Church found him guilty of this belief (they believed and demonstrated with their “science” that the Earth was the center of the universe and all revolved around it) and they sentenced him to the penalty that for the rest of his life he was “under the restrictions of house arrest, he was forbidden to write or publish his ideas.”
Many people believe that “faith is above reason”.
It is in the interest and functioning of government bureaucracies, fighter-jet producing bureaucracies (military-industrial complex) and other interests and various mind-sets for fighter-jets to be built.
Apologize for my digressions and extreme ideas.
January 25 2023 to/from J
Have never truly understood human belief systems, other than they are no better (though perhaps in some way different) than the rats in the psychology lab (based on experience, have a degree in clinical and experimental psychology).
For some “wired” reason people believe what they are told.
They are “told” that something has “value” and they believe it.
There seems to be a prevalent belief that if the US government sends/gives something of value to foreign sources that it takes away from spending on domestic “issues” (e.g., homeless, medical care, etc.).
There is no understanding (even after being explained), that there is no connection, as the “money” is not “real” or “tangible” in any way, and if any is “needed” it is merely “created” by adding some “zeros” on a spreadsheet.
But, then people “believe” that cryptocurrencies are “real” and have “value”, when they are “created” by running electrons around in circles inside a computer.
Ponzi schemers, clergy, politicians and stock-brokers have a field day exploiting this characteristic of the human animal.
Strange stuff.

In news, the goal for the event/person is to be the top 3 stories of the day.
In social and other media, the goal is the same, but the top 3 stories is replaced by event/person with top 3 number of exposures
For example, greatest numbers of Tiktok views, greatest number of viewers of a sports event, greatest number of music track downloads, etc.

‘It’s amazing to walk into a store and buy anything without looking at the price tag!
Thank you Dollar Store.’
That was Gold’s concept with the 99cent store.
It is based on the human animal wanting security in behavioral response.
For example:
It is better to have a job with a known weekly paycheck with an exact constant amount than to be in business where the amount of the income is relatively unknown.
It is better to purchase an item or service from a vendor where the price is constant and known.
It is better to purchase from a store where all items have the same constant price.
Is it better to stay in a domestic abusive relationship, because there is the security of knowing the behavioral responses of the other person, than to leave the relationship and not have the security of knowing the next behavioral responses? Obviously not, but it is why people remain.

This is irregardless of the political, economic and/or ideological system.
Every war ends in a peace or a stalemate and sets the stage for the next war.
The next war is always worse than the last war.
Armaments drive advancements in technology.
Armaments over time become more destructive to humans and physical “assets”.

Digital censorship, propaganda and change of information:
The advantage/disadvantage of digital information that is digitally connected (via the internet) and that the digital information can “instantly” be changed at will.
With a click of a mouse all information can be changed to “substantiate” any position.
With a printed (ink on paper) artifact, one would need to destroy every copy of the artifact (book, periodical, etc.), a far more difficult task.
